It hadn't been long since Son Gohan had taken up the identity of The Great Saiyaman, but what he'd done during that time had made him somewhat famous. After all, there weren't too many people around who could fly through the air like a bird, lift up busses, or fire energy blasts from their hands, but that was just the life that Gohan had grown up with.
Today, however, was different than normal. Apparently, his "Aunt" Bulma had been contacted by a friend of hers, a record exec who was managing an idol named Risette. He'd seen her on TV a few times while walking around town, but didn't know much about her. Apparently, one of her fans had been writing some very unsettling letters to her, and the gentleman wanted someone to keep an eye on her.
And, Gohan did owe Bulma for this awesome suit.
In any case, he decided to make his way over to meet her himself and get an introduction. After verifying he is who he says he is, The Great Saiyaman is allowed down to Risette's dressing room, where he will give a knock.
"Uh, Miss Risette? I'm the Great Saiyaman, and I've been asked to help keep you safe. Do you mind if I come in and meet you?" If she's decent, of course...not that Gohan has much experience with that sort of thing at all.
Receiving threatening or disturbing letters was not at all new to Rise. She had been receiving them from the very moment she became Risette. Most of the time, she wouldn't even read them since it was her manager's responsibility to weed them out. However, they decided that this would be a special case for her own safety.
This whole incident began when she received a disturbing set of letters. They were disturbing, but harmless enough. The writer was expressing his admiration at the same time, calling her his soulmate. When her tour began, she wasn't able to reply. The next set of letters became angry. Her managers removed these, and Rise had not been able to read or reply. Things really escalated when the stalking began. His letters began to describe her day-to-day activities from school to being out with friends to rehearsals. The agency would have been happy to keep it from her much longer, if not for what happened the week before.
On her way home, Rise found two guys waiting for her at her temporary dorm. She was surprised because no one but the agency should know where she lived while she was in town. She tried walking past them but they stopped her and began pulling her away. "Lets go have some fun," one of them said. If not for the dorm mother that went down to take out the trash, they would have been successful. The next day, she received a letter.
Did you like my present?
The agency did not want the authorities to get too involved, so they sought the help of Capsule Corp, with their promise to keep it quiet. She had heard that they sent Saiyaman, who was currently making headlines for his heroism. When she found out, she actually began to feel hopeful.
"Come in!", she said. She was still dressed in her costume and had a bouquet in her arms. Today was the last day of dress rehearsals and she should be relieved, but she was not. There was another letter.
The young man will do so. He had been briefed about the letters when he decided to take up the assignment to protect her, and despite his happy outward demeanor, he was a bit worried for her. The threats he used to face as a kid were one thing, but they were things that he could understand. They wanted destruction and death, but they weren't insane. They were cold and calculating, he could track them down.
This was different. This was a madman.
He smiles as he sees the young woman in front of him, "It's a pleasure to be able to meet you, Miss Risette." He takes care not to let his cape get caught in the door as he closes it, and takes a look around, getting a feel of the area, both visually and spiritually.
Nothing out of the ordinary. He could feel the workers around, no odd intents at the moment, but the second he looks at Rise, his jaw drops a bit. Not because of what she's wearing, though he does note that it looks very cute on her, but just due to the sense he gets off her. He's never seen anything like that before, and he can swear that he sees someone standing behind her, in the same pose, but...not her.
He quickly closes his mouth, though, and tries to salvage this, "Uh, sorry about that. I'm not used to being so close to a super star. Left me a bit star struck." He laughs nervously, his hand behind his helmet. "Uh, anyway, those flowers are nice..."
There is a pause, then he clears his throat and composes himself, "So, I heard from your manager that you got another letter? Can I see it?"
Rise smiled what was probably her first real smile since she became aware of the letters, flattered that someone as popular as the Great Saiyaman knew who she was. Like many of the people in the city, she was also curious about his identity. No one knew how old he was, so she always wondered if her fame reached his demographic.
"Thank you. I am so flattered that the great and famous Saiyaman knows me! That makes my day!"
When he mentioned the flowers though she became a bit uncertain. The flowers had came with the letter. Usually, letters appeared with the fan letters. This time, they appeared in her changing room. This scared her more than any of the other letters before because whoever it was was growing bolder. The guy had given her a bouquet of Anemone, which also means the feeling of being forsaken.
Her manager hasn't really told her how much he told Saiyaman. However if he was going to be more involved in her case, she might as well tell him about it. She hands him the letter she had been reading earlier. "I found this here. In my dressing room."
You have forsaken me, but I have forgiven you. I still love you. Return to my side.
Rise frowned, not liking how scared she was by all this. "I think 'return to my side' is referencing a line from one of my songs in my last single." Did he think that the song was for him?
He just waves a hand at her, a small blush appearing under his helmet. He's not really used to this sort of praise.
"Please, I should be flattered that someone like you knows who I am. You're famous, and make people happy throughout the nation, putting yourself out there all the time and giving yourself. I'm just a guy in a mask. It's easy to do stuff when you get to hide like this."
He smiles, though, but there's a hint of sadness to it. "I just don't want people in my school to get targeted. My family...well, they can handle just about anything, but I want to make sure that other people are safe."
He accepts the letter and reads it, frowning. "In your dressing room? I thought that they'd increased security after this started happening. I mean, they almost made me take off my helmet before your Manager stepped in and rushed me through." He would have taken off his helmet to protect her, though.
"Could it be something else? Old boyfriend? I know Idols aren't supposed to have boyfriends...but from what some of my friends said, sometimes they keep them secret. The line itself is too...exact, I guess think. They seem to believe that you were with them and went away."
The Great Saiyaman was was a textbook superhero. It was endearing. She had never seen anyone say anything like that so sincerely before, making her feel a little bad about her bad first impression of him during his start. When she first read about it on the newspaper, she had doubts about the integrity of the article. She didn't think costumed superheroes existed outside otaku conventions. At the time, she also thought the idea of costumed crime fighting was a little tacky. She hadn't been alone. Some of her fellow idols thought so too.
The more lives he saved, the more she began to change her mind and the mind of her peers. Now, when another of his endeavors came out in the paper, the other girls in the shared dressing room would giggle and gossip about him. Some even admitting to wondering if he was handsome under that mask. She never participated in any of those debates, but she did understand their fascination of what he looked like. If she were to be honest, she would like to see it too.
"They did. As far as I know, no one but those who are part of the production have access to this room." She wanted to drop the bouquet into the trash bin, but she knew that security would need to see it later. Instead, she placed it on her vanity. "No ex-boyfriend," she answered lightheartedly. "Didn't have time for one. I don't think this is something I want someone I want to date to do."
Without thinking about it, Gohan frowns a bit, "No ex, eh? That's kind of sad. From what I've seen, and the time I've spent here with you, I would think that people would be knocking down your door, though..." He glances at the bouquet, "Maybe that isn't always the best of things to have happen."
"I understand not having time for that sort of thing, though. With classes, homework, and this, I really just don't have much time for...well, anything else. I really just want to be a scholar, but I can't just watch bad things happen when I know that I can do something about it." He smiles a little bit at that, then points to Rise, "That's why, Risette, I swear to you that nothing bad will happen while I'm here. That's a Great Saiyaman Promise."
And then he strikes a pose. A silly, dorky pose. Think of something from a Super Sentai show, and then make it dorkier. That's the one, that one you're thinking of right now.
Of course, the second that he makes his declaration, a red tinged Mist starts to roll into the room, from the window, under the door. The Great Saiyaman stands up stiff as a board a gloved hand to his head, his mouth open. "W-what is this stuff? I haven't felt something this malevolent since Cell...Risette!"
If it weren't for the fluttering of the cape and the sudden closeness of him, one might not realize that he actually moved. One second he was standing near the door, and the next he was literally at Rise's side holding out a hand to her. "Come on, get close to me. This could be gas, and I'm not sure what effect it might have on normal folks."
Rise had seen a lot of this dorkiness on television before. She supposed it answered the question of if he was the same man behind the cameras.
He wasn't wrong. There were times she gets so frustrated by the fact that she didn't have a boyfriend. She wanted to go on dates after school like many of her classmates did and experience what it was like to be young and in love. It was almost irony to her that she had the Lovers Arcana. There were times she didn't think she really fit to have the Lovers. A part of her felt that on another person who knew how to fight, they could do amazing things.
She couldn't fight. What did she do? She puts on bikinis and sing sometimes. None of which are very helpful in battle.
She shook off her insecurities and smiled. Another thing she realized about Saiyaman was that he was probably pretty young since he was talking about classes and school like it was still going on. More or less, he probably a few years older than her. Feeling less weird about it now, she turns on the charm. "Be careful, Mr Saiyaman. All this attention to my lack of a boyfriend might make me think you are asking because you are interested."
However, this was interrupted by a familiar mist slipping into the room. Normally, people would be running out of the room. However, she knew better and was all too familiar with it. But, why here and now?! Rise knew that she wasn't strong enough to take on some shadows on her own and she had no idea how strong this one was going to be.
She turned to Saiyaman sadly and shook her head. It is too late. There was no getting away now. She had to fight. Her friends had always protected her. Saiyaman was supposed to do the same, but her friends are not here now and this wasn't something Saiyaman could fight like normal. "I know what this is." She reached for two pairs of glasses inside her bag. "Put this on." He might need to take off his helmet for this. "Please trust me."
"I'm flattered that you'd even consider it, Risette, but kind of like you, I'm probably too busy for it. Even if I met someone who really liked me, I'd just be too busy." His smile is a little sad at that, "And I don't want to disappear for years like my Dad did." He shrugs, however, and the smile goes back to normal, "But, that's in the past, and he's gotten a lot better now that he's alive again."
He does not intend to explain that statement.
When Rise hands him the glasses and tells him to put them on, he looks at her for a few seconds, then reaches up to his helmet, undoes the chin strap and pulls it off, revealing a kind, if serious looking, face. It's easy to tell that he's trying to be comforting as he puts the glasses on, covering his black eyes.
"Risette, I trusted you from the second that I was able to really see you. I can tell that you're something special, and if you've dealt with this before, I'll follow your lead on it."
As he pulls open the door to look out, an aura appears around him, crackling and dancing in the air. He looks at her and gives a thumbs up, "Come on, lets get you safe and home."
Rise has now officially seen the Great Saiyaman's face. He was young, like she expected. Maybe a little younger than she had first estimated. His build really made it difficult to make a more accurate estimate. She used to think that the biggest mystery about him was his appearance, however it seems there was still more.
What did he mean by what he said about his father? None of it made a lot of sense. If they survive this, she was going to ask him to elaborate that story.
If they survive ...
She really shouldn't talk like that because they were going to survive this. This did made her ask a few questions though. Why did this have to happen here? And whose shadow would she be facing? Reaching into her pocket for her other phone that housed her personal contacts, she checked if she had received any text from the others. It was usually on silent when she is working and she had been working non-stop for a few days.
Lo and behold, she did get a text from the others concerning the Midnight Channel.
Apparently, something or someone did appear last night. It wasn't someone they know though, but suspect she would be someone she knows. They sent her a picture and though it was blurry, she did find the figure familiar. However, it was the last person she thought to see.
It was a girl from her past as a trainee. Before Rise was Risette, she had been a trainee to join a girl group with a lot of members. Afraid that she was going to be buried under the hundreds of pretty faces, she accepted the offer to go solo. As a trainee, she had been close to one girl, Nananyan. She was cute and preppy, not surprisingly she went on to join the group. Rise hasn't heard from her since.
What happened?
She had no time to think more about it since she began to hear faint singing the further they go inside. All of a sudden there was a gigantic door in front of them with a sign that said: 'All of Nananyan! One night only!'
Before she opened the door though, she turns to Saiyaman. "There is something I need to tell you."
Oh, there were a lot of Things (with a capital T) that Gohan would probably have to tell her about, some day. When they survive all of this.
It was lucky, he supposed, that they hadn't run in to any normal people after they left the dressing room, since his helmet was off so he could more easily wear the glasses. They were odd, these things. He was getting a slight headache while he wasn't wearing them, and that just wasn't something that happened...well, ever. Heck, he's never had so much as a cold, to be honest. The worst things that ever happen to him were broken bones, but honestly when he gets those, something's really going poorly for the world.
When they finally get to the door, Gohan stops and looks at it, puzzled. "All of Nananyan? Who's that? What in Dende's name is this place, anyway? The fog seems evil, there's nobody here, and I'm just worried that we might be lost in a maze of some sort. I can't sense any human chi around, either, aside from yours...and I'll be honest, I have some questions for you about that once we get out of here." He doesn't sound upset, just confused.
And then Rise starts speaking, grabbing Gohan's complete attention. "What is it, Risette? You seemed to be well prepared for this with the glasses. Have you dealt with something like this before?"
Rise nodded. She was not in a hurry to open this door, but she knew she had to. If she wanted to get Nananyan back she had to go. Could she wait for her friends to arrive? She couldn't even message them that she was in trouble and there was no way of getting out from here.
She had to take the best chance she had. "My friend, Nana Akimoto is probably inside this door ... and you will see something called a Shadow." She began to tell him a brief description of what shadows were, the Midnight Channel and how this world works. She tried to keep it as short as she can then she also told him of her suspicions of Nananyan being possibly involved with the stalking incident. As she was from a completely different prefecture, it didn't make sense for Nananyan to be here. It was too much of a coincidence.
However, she couldn't answer why though. She had thought they were good friends when she left to go solo.
Now that she has told him everything she knew, it was time. Her heart was beating fast at the thought of doing this alone. But then she looked back at Saiyaman and realized that maybe she wasn't alone.
So, she pushed the door open. She found Nana passed out in the middle of a giant stage. But that wasn't the most pressing thing at the moment. They were surrounded by a concert room-ful of Nananyans. There had to be hundreds of them and all wearing different costumes, different faces and different dances.
The Nananyan on stage dressed in a school uniform took notice of their arrival. "Look who is here for the opening act! It is my best of friends, Risette!" With this, all of them stood still and turned towards them. "And she brought ... a date? Oh no! Risette-chan! You should know better than that!"
Rise knew those looks too well. She had them once upon a time too.
Her explanation about shadows gives him pause. He actually looks really interested in it, to be quite honest. This was definitely something that they'll have to discuss later, from the sounds of it. Heck, Bulma would probably be interested in it as well.
"So, this shadow...it's the manifestations of one's inner desires, both positive and negative? Though, I'd imagine in this situation it would be just the negative desires...well, we should be fine if it's just he..."
Gohan will follow Rise and enter the room, his voice trailing off as he sees the massive amounts of, well, person in the room. He almost reels back, but catches himself. To be honest, this wasn't the weirdest thing that he's seen, probably even this year.
He balls his hand up into a fist, staring straight at the figure on the stage. He points at her and grins, "I am a hero of justice, here to right wrongs and protect the masses." He strikes a pose, standing on one leg while putting his arms out in a v formation, "I am The Great Saiyaman!" Switching to another pose, he glances over at Rise and then back to Nananyan, "Risette and I are going to save her friend from you, Shadow."
As far as the date goes, Gohan will just blush for a moment, then shake his head. Honestly, he hadn't intended for this to go like this, but he was rocking the poses tonight, so who knows what might happen!
The shadow had one brow raised at his array of poses, unimpressed. She scoffed his tacky costume and tackier posing. "Risette-chi, you have really strange taste. Are you really dating him?"
"Mou! This is not a date!" However, Rise was still blushing as she said this. Not that she would mind going on a date with him, but who in their right mind would choose to go on a date here? She might not have the most normal life, but that didn't mean she would mind having a normal date or two. "Don't talk bad about Saiyaman either! He is a hero! He is everybody's hero!"
But there was no time to complain about her strange dating life. She ran to where Nana was still lay unconscious and to her relief, Nana was breathing. There were two things she noticed about her friend. Nana looked almost gaunt and had dark circles under her eyes. She looked so different from the fresh and preppy trainee she trained with.
"Rise?" Nana opened her eyes. "Why? Where?" She suddenly gasped in shock to see so many people with her face around them.
"We are you!" The shadows answered the question they knew she was about to ask. "We are your many faces. You just hate being in a group, don't you? Why do you need a group when you can play every role by yourself? Cute? Sexy? Sporty? We can do it all! Isn't that more interesting? More interesting than Risette-chi."
Rise hugged her shaking friend tighter. This scene. All of this was so similar to her battle with her shadow. Her various images surrounding her and mocking her.
"That is not true," her friend whispered. "Rise is my friend. She deserved to go solo ... "
"But we all know that you think you deserve it more! We are you after all!"
"No! No! No!" Rise tried to shush her to keep her from saying the words she knew would lead to trouble. However, it doesn't work. Nana refused to believe. "No! You are not me!"
That was all she needed to say. All of a sudden, her other selves seemed to melt away around them and slithered towards the stage. Smoke began to gather around the stage and when it dispersed in front of them was a black, sludge-like monster with white masks all around it. "I am your true self!"
Of course, Nana chose this moment to pass out --- leaving Gohan and Rise to take care of this mess.
Hearing Risette call him a hero made him blush a little bit, but now was not the time to dwell on that. He didn't like the look of those figures, and he especially didn't like the look of them converging upon each other to become...well, that monster slime.
Now was the time for Gohan to take action. In an instant, he is at Rise's side, a gust of air being the only sign that he'd moved at all. His normally kind face has a look of intensity on it, his brow furrowed and his teeth clenched. Whatever this thing was, this Shadow, he and Rise would defeat it together. He looked around the room, assessing the situation. He couldn't risk going to his full power: He remembered that Buu was able to rip open a hole in dimensions, and if this one was closer to our world than the Room of Spirit and Time, then that thing could get loose. The power of the Kais was not something for this fight.
Just the power of an angry alien race.
An aura appears around him, looking like a force shield. With a shout, the aura will turn to gold, with blue crackles. His hair will change from black to gold, and stick up very straight, and his black eyes will turn a striking green color.
"Risette," he says slowly. He is calm, calmer than one might think possible in a situation like this, "We are going to save your friend and take her some place safe. Together." And with that, he'll hold his hand, still surrounded by that sparking gold aura, out to her. They were a team.
At first, Rise shook her friend to get her to wake up. "Nana-chan! Nana-chan! Don't do this! At least not here! Nana-chan! Wake up!" Unfortunately, no amount of shaking and shouting could do it. This was truly now, her mess to clean. The others would probably realize too late what just happened. The thought of doing this alone scared her. The responsibility and the consequence if she failed would be overwhelming for anyone.
However, before she could sink further into her fears, Gohan reached a hand towards her. She feared being alone? This hand told her otherwise.
'Together,' he proposed.
Maybe. Just maybe. She didn't have to do this alone after all.
Rise put Nana down and stood up. She had not even realized that she had been on the floor. "Together," she parroted. With him there, she was feeling stronger and bolder. "Saiyaman-san, call me Rise."
Lifting her hand in the air, she then shouted those familiar words. "Persona!"
Hey Rise, want to meet a super hero?
Today, however, was different than normal. Apparently, his "Aunt" Bulma had been contacted by a friend of hers, a record exec who was managing an idol named Risette.

Their eyes were all screaming, Look at me!

But there was no time to complain about her strange
datinglife. She ran to where Nana was still lay unconscious and to her relief, Nana was breathing. There were two things she noticed about her friend. Nana looked almost gaunt and had dark circles under her eyes. She looked so different from the fresh and preppy trainee she trained with."Rise?" Nana opened her eyes.

"Persona!"
Himiko ... was finally coming to play.
