Character Name: Lenalee Lee
Series: D. Gray-man
Canon: [ Just before the end of the Level 4 Akuma battle in the Black Order Headquarters ]
Lenalee is an Exorcist for the Black Order, hailing from China. Her parents died when she was a child, and the only family she now has left is her brother, Komui. Their parents were killed by Akuma. The Black Order took her away and forcefully joined her with the 'Dark Boots.' She was not like other Exorcists where they are chosen to be an Apostle. While in the order, she saw the experiments the order did to make Exorcists. This led her to hate the Order and God. A child to see those awful experiments... it was probably a traumatizing experience.
She had tried to kill herself, and because of that they strapped to her bed to prevent herself from doing it again. For three years, Lenalee felt like she was alone in the Order. To her surprise though, one day she opened her eyes to see Komui beside her. It had taken him three years but he could finally be by her side. Lenalee gets very guilty though. Her brother had given up everything to be with her. She feels guilty that she seemed to be imprisoning her brother to the Order too. With her brother around though, she feels a little bit more at ease at headquarters. She was now even doing her duties with a smile.
However, those three years are not so easy to forget. Lenalee never necessarily fought for the Order. She fought for her friends and Komui. She fights to protect them, but she doesn't really care for God at all.
In the beginning of the series, Allen was mistaken for an intruder when he reached the Order's Headquarters because Komui had lost General Cross's recommendation letter under the pile of paper work on his desk. After a little digging, they were finally able to find the recommendation. Outside, Allen was trying to fight off Kanda. It could not be helped, Allen was a cursed child with his Parasitic Type Innocence on his arm. Lenalee was the one who stopped Kanda from killing him and showed the boy around Headquarters.
When Kanda and Allen returned from a mission, they found Lenalee unconscious on the stairs and an injured River telling them to run. It seems that Komurin II, Komui's invention, had went out of control when he drank coffee. They tried to help the unconscious Lenalee. The robot thought it was necessary to give her an operation to make her 'macho.' But, the robot's attention then went to Allen who was injured. While the robot was trying to give Allen surgery, Lenalee regained consciousness and was very unhappy with her brother.
With the use of her Dark Boots and her graceful acrobatic moves, she was able to save Allen and beat the robot. Before Lenalee could completely destroy Komurin II, however, Komui tried to beg his sister for mercy. He argued that it wasn't Komurin's fault, but the coffee. As much as Lenalee loves her brother, Lenalee was the type to hold a grudge and there was no way that she was forgiving that robot. This was the first look at how flawless Lenalee can be with her Innocence in battle.
After that, Lenalee and Allen were assigned to handle an unusual mission that had something to do with time. This is where they met Miranda Lotto for the first time. Miranda was a woman with no self-confidence at all and believes herself to be bad luck. The culprit seemed to be a clock. It was a clock that she bought, because she felt the clock was so much like her. The clock was unwanted. Everyone thought that the clock was broken. But, the clock worked for Miranda. The clock was an Innocence and it had chosen Miranda as its Mistress. It responded to Miranda's wish one night when she returned from work drunk after being fired yet again. Her wish was for tomorrow to never come. Miranda still can't control her new Innocence, so she was unable to change her wish. So, Lenalee and Allen try to help Miranda with her job to make her really want for tomorrow to come. The mission became dangerous upon the arrival of Rhode Camelot. While working, a thief came and stole the bag of money that they earned for the day. Knowing that Miranda would be in trouble if the thief got away, Lenalee and Allen took off after him. The thief turned out to be only a distraction though. They were after Miranda. Realizing this, they tried to fight so that they can quickly return to the helpless Miranda. The Akuma overpowered them though.
When Allen woke up, his arm was nailed to the wall. Rhode and Lenalee were before him and to his shock, Lenalee had been turned into a beautiful living doll. Even though Allen was so weak from his previous battle with the Akumas he still fought to save Miranda. This touched her because no one had ever done anything like that for her before. Miranda was able to use her Innocence to restore Allen's health and awaken Lenalee from her doll-like state. It is here Rhode displays again her heartlessness. Rhode ordered one of the Akumas to self-destruct. Allen tried to save the Akuma, but Lenalee stopped him. He demanded angrily why she did that, and she slapped him then just as angrily she told him, "Because we are friends!"
She was angry that he was trying to risk his life like that. Allen's determination and desire to save everyone was something she admired and hated about him. But, Lenalee's world was much too closed. She felt like a piece of her world is chipped away when she loses a friend. After Rhode Camelot left, they find Miranda trying so hard to control her Innocence. It turned out their recovery was only temporary. Lenalee and Allen understood, they smiled and told Miranda that it was okay and that she could let go. After much hesitation, Miranda did and ran quickly to find a doctor for the two injured Exorcists.
Later, their next mission was to look for Allen's Master, General Cross. Here, they meet Lavi and his master, the Bookman. They were going to help them in their mission to find the General. The strange thing about Bookmen is that they take neither sides of the war. They are simply around to record History and they just happened to be in the Exorcists side at the moment.
Lenalee had not forgiven Allen yet by the time they reached the stop where Krory lived. Ever since she slapped him, they hadn't really spoken. Allen apologized sincerely for what he did, but Lenalee already knew he was sorry. After that, she did forgive him but she also knew that it wouldn't be the last time he would sacrifice himself. She admitted to him that she hated that he thought he had to risk his life like that. In a huff, she returned to the train with their lunches. It is around this arc that we take a peek into Lenalee's dream. She never knows why but she has dream about a ruined world. All around her was water and ruins. The ruins of what looked like headquarters. And, she could not do anything but cry as she watched the scene on top of a rock.
Allen missed the train and Lavi was told to go after him. They returned later with Arystar Krory, a Parasite type Exorcist they met. Instead of General Cross, they found Suman Dark. He had turned into a 'Togaochi.' An Exorcist begins to turn into a Togaochi when the Innocence rejects him. Lenalee had seen it a lot of times when she was a child. The people of the Order were experimenting to make Exorcists. She didn't know what happened to people after being turned into a Togaochi, but later Komui told her that a Togaochi dies. Komui informed them that it was possible that Suman was the traitor that gave away the locations of all the other Exorcists that were killed at a rapid pace. With a heavy heart, Komui gave them a mission. After Suman died, retrieve his Innocence before the Akuma gets it. Allen refused to let Suman die.
But, in the end, even though Allen was able to save Suman's body, he didn't have a spirit anymore. Tykki, a person from the Noah Family like Rhode Camelot arrived and destroyed Suman's body too. Allen was next, but he instead left Allen dying. He was found by Fou, a member of the Black Order Asian Branch. In the fight, Allen had lost his Innocence. The people of the China branch told them to go on to Japan. They were able to leave because of the arrival of Miranda Lotto and the help of the beautiful Mistress, Anita. She had been told that General Cross had died at sea. Allen refused to believe that, giving Anita hope.
Miranda had finished her training and was now going to help them in their search for General Cross. With a heavy heart, Lenalee boards the ship feeling depressed and blaming herself for Allen. She hadn't even appreciated the new uniforms Miranda gave them. They were gifts from her brother. Lenalee recovered later and went to Anita asking if she could borrow ties for her hair. Hers were lost in the battle. Anita gave her the ties she got from her mother but never had the heart to use them. Lenalee did not want to accept the gift, but Anita insisted. Here, Anita admits her feelings for General Cross.
While at sea, they are attacked by a Level 3 Akuma. Lenalee was forced to go battle it alone. But as she was, Lenalee really is no match for a Level 3 Akuma. His strength was too much. In the verge of dying, Komui woke up. He looked like he had just woken up from an awful nightmare. It is possible that he had somehow sensed that his sister was in danger. Allen seemed to sense it too. It has not been explained why. Lenalee didn't want to give up though. She didn't want to die knowing that the Akuma was going to kill her friends next. With the risk of her life, she used Maximum Invocation and used her Ultimate technique, Falling Footwork: "Iron Shackles." It was a gamble because Lenalee had only 87% synchronization with her Innocence. That technique needs to have a 100% synchronization in order for it to work. After beating the Akuma, Lenalee had to suffer the consequence. Her legs were in bad condition. When Lavi found her, she was protected by her Innocence.
Well, Lenalee couldn't move her legs, but she was eventually able to walk again, and they make it to Japan and find out that because it's been in isolation for so long that it got turned into an Akuma nest with no one knowing. Lenalee and her friends and up running into the Earl of the Millennium and some of the Noah and start fighting, and are joined by Kanda, Marie, and General Teidoll. Lenalee is frustrated because her legs don't work and she can't help fight, and during the battle her Innocence crystallizes around her again, making the Earl think that she has the Heart of innocence, and if he destroys that all Innocence vanished.
The Earl goes after her, but before he manages to attack, Allen reappears after gaining his new innocence, using the ark to get from China to Japan. The Earl and the Noah retreat, but that doesn't mean that will be the last they meet. Lenalee couldn't believe it. She was very glad to see Allen again. But before they had the change to get reacquainted, a portal opens up under Lenalee and she falls into the ark, with Allen, Kanda, Krory, and Choji following right after. Tykki tells them that the ark is falling apart as they speak because all the data is being uploaded into a new ark. He gives them a key, and tells them to find their way to the top because there is a door out, they just need to find it.
So they go through the ark, and one by one her friends stay behind to try and fight off the Noah. At one point Lenalee starts to break a little, worried about her friends and hating herself for not being able to help. Allen takes her face in his hands and tells her she needs to calm down, and that she has to be strong. So she vows that if they survive that she'll become stronger then she was before. So Lenalee, Allen, Lavi, and Choji make it to the top where Tykki and Rhode are waiting. A fight breaks out, and Rhode traps her and Choji in a glass box. She tries to kick her way out but she's just too weak and her legs hurt too much from overdoing her Innocence.
During the fight, Allen tries to exorcise the Noah from Tykki, but it ended up having the opposite effect of setting free hidden power. General Cross appears unexpectedly to help, tossing Allen and Timcampy into a secret room while the Earl comes and carts off Tykki. By this point, the ark had practically crumbled to nothing, but Allen was able to restore it all -including their left behind friends- by playing a specific song on a piano. All the Noah had gone to the new ark, and Allen's song was able to stop the download before they took the 'Akuma Egg' that they keep the ark and the egg and use it to return to Headquarters.
Once they get back to Headquarters, everyone is hospitalized for a time to treat their wounds. Lenalee removes her Innocence completely because she's so weak that her sync rate was dangerously low, and if she tried to use it then she might lose her life in the process. Soon after a man from the Vatican named, Leverrier comes, and Lenalee is absolutely terrified of him. She remembers him as the man who forcibly experimented with Innocence, trying to force non-conformists to join with Innocence, which would always end up resulting in a Togaochi, like Suman Dark. It's also hinted that she might have been involved in some sort of experiment as well.
She ends up going to hide with Kanda, while he's meditating, just to keep away from Leverrier. Science teams from branches all over the world were sent into Headquarters to study the Akuma Egg, but unbeknownst to everyone there, one of the teams was replaced by Lulu and a hoard of level 3 Akuma who were there to take back the egg. During the fight, one of the level 3's evolved into a level 4, and it took nearly every exorcist, including Lenalee to bring it down. Leverrier forced her to re-sync with her Innocence, stating that Exorcists are nothing more then weapons to be used at the church saw fit. Before Halveska was able to put the Innocence inside of her, they're attacked by the level 4. She was struggling to keep her sanity through this battle, where her world was literally falling apart around her. Finally, she finds strength and a reason to fight, wanting to save her brother and her friends, and asks the Innocence to accept her again, and she promises to follow it until the end. She drinks her Innocence, which fuses with her blood and bursts out of her feet as a red, angelic looking crystal before binding around her ankles as red rings.
When activated, her Innocence turns back into the Dark Boots, only now they're much more fearsome looking. They are thicker and bulkier and far more powerful then before. While it is not a parasite type like Allen's Innocence, it is still very much a part of her. It's considered a brand new type of Innocence, the Crystal Type.
Zero Hour Price:
Lenalee will lose her memories of Anita, her crew and the heartbreaking battle she had before she lost her long hair. Anita is a woman that helped Lenalee and the exorcists get to Edo.
That battle had left a mark in Lenalee’s soul because she could not protect them. It almost broke her that she could not protect them. Despite her brief acquaintance with Anita, Lenalee could not help but be amazed by Anita’s strong feelings for Cross Marian. Lenalee had learned a lot from Anita, and for a brief time, Lenalee had a sister. Anita had helped her with her hair and taught her to believe and believe strongly. She even gave Lenalee an important gift. They were ties for her hair. Anita told her that it had been a gift from her mother. Lenalee did not want to accept them, but the woman was insistent.. She was touched.
After her battle with the Akuma, she realized that she had been too late to save Anita and the crew. She had no choice but to watch Anita and the crew die. Lenalee had seen many of her colleagues die before, but this was the first time for her to see a person, the nearest thing to a sister that she ever had, die.
Powers and Abilities:
Dark Boots - Lenalee's Innocence, her Anti-Akuma Weapon. Lenalee's power is mostly on her legs. They give her amazing kicking and leg power. She is also able to do graceful, acrobatic moves while in the air. They give the illusion that she can fly. But, she is actually using her other ability which is manipulating sound waves and stepping on them. She can also look like she can walk on water.
Her powers have risks though. If she uses Maximum Invocation when she isn't even at 100%, there are consequences. Falling Footwork: Iron Shackles is a technique used during Maximum Invocation. And, it was shown during the battle with a Level 3 Akuma. At that time, Lenalee was only 87% synchronized with her Innocence. Doing a Maximum Invocation is pushing her Dark Boots to the limits.
They are 'Crystal Type' Innocence and it is made with her blood. They are much easier to use than the original since they respond to her emotions. But her synchronization dropped a few percent.
Third Person Sample:
Lenalee was used to pretending to be strong. She did not want her brother to worry. It was because when an exorcist leaves on a mission, it was never a guarantee that they will return. Lenalee knew that and Komui knew that, but they chose to ignore it. Lenalee always left with a smile because she also knew that her world did not revolve around only her brother anymore. Allen, Miranda, Lavi and Kanda were just as much her family and she wanted to fight to protect them.
Once in a while though, Lenalee would report to the headquarters to call update them on their progress. “Hello? Big brother?”
Her brother always greeted her enthusiastically and Lenalee would pretend to be annoyed and scold her brother that he should be doing his job. She would never say it, but hearing her brother’s voice always reminded her what she as fighting for despite her strong dislike for god and the Order.
“No, this is River. We can’t seem to find you brother again,” he apologized, but sounding annoyed that their head was trying to escape his duties again. “Do you want me to look for him?”
Sometimes, she could even sense her brother was napping. At times like those, she felt like she could drown in the guilt for bringing her brother to the Order. At the same time, they were also tears of thankfulness because her brother saved her from destroying herself.
“That is alright, River. He is somewhere napping again.” It always amazed River how she would always know. Lenalee had never given the answer because it was the same as how Komui could sense when his little sister was in danger.
Sometimes on missions, she found herself crying alone because she never wanted to become a burden. Always. She kept a strong façade. But, she was very honest in her dreams.
Her dreams? Sometimes she dreamt of her destroyed home (the Black Order Headquarters) and she would be sitting on top of a broken column. If there was a god, why was he doing this? Why can’t he protect the people who were willing to die for him? For Lenalee, losing someone was like losing a piece of her world. Watching the broken pieces of a once proud stronghold was like having the world crashing down on her.
Her family was her reason to fight, if she loses that then she really has no reason to live.
Still talking to River she says, “Tell my brother, I’ll be home soon.”
