CANON Macross Frontier (Movies)
CANON POINT Post-Sayonara no Tsubasa
HISTORY: Here
PERSONALITY:
Alto is a very private person. Most of the time, Alto is quiet and keeps to himself, mostly keeping distance from large groups. He would much rather observe the sky or making paper airplanes. He does not mind the small groups or being alone though because he was not good at being around other people since he had been isolated most of his life due to Kabuki training.
As a child, Alto did not have much in terms of having any hopes nor dreams. He was bred to take over the Saotome Kabuki school and received the title of 'Genius Actress, Alto-Hime.' His life had been already decided for him. It seemed inevitable that he would take over the family legacy. The more famous he became, the more he grew afraid for himself. The more he became lost in every role he took, the more he loses his own identity to the point he would sometimes forget whether he was even a man or a woman. Not wanting to forget or lose his identity as"Alto Saotome," it became one of the reasons why he left the Saotome family and resigned from the Kabuki world. When he did, his father disowned him which is something that still haunted Alto.
Flying became his only comfort and being a pilot became his true dream. It was the reason why he enrolled at a Mihoshi Academy, which is a technical school that could help him fly. He even confessed to Sheryl that rather than a professional fighter, he was a professional pilot. He chose to be defined by his ability to fly rather than his ability to fight. It is why he considers it an annoyance to know how limiting the simulated sky was in the Frontier and longed to someday fly freely.
He sometimes comes across aloof and standoffish to people who didn't know him very well. However, he does have a sensitive and vulnerable side that he only really shows to a handful of people like Ranka Lee, the girl he grew up with, Mikhail Blanc, the annoying classmate who later became his brother-in-arms, and Sheryl Nome, the girl he eventually fell in love with.
It was not easy for Alto to enlist, not only because he hates wars and the army but also because he does not do well with authority figures. He has a tendency to do his own thing, especially when he is flying. This may be due to his strict upbringing while growing up. When he enlisted into the SMS, he only slowly began to let more people in. First regarding them as colleagues, but with every battle fought became closer to him than his real family. The people he worked with in SMS were a great inspiration to him, as they continued to fight and made so many sacrifices despite so many of their brethren dying. It became an honor for him to fight with them and eventually, it became an honor for him to die for them.
Initially, his blunt and honest personality did not help in winning him friends. This can be seen as one of his greatest strengths or weaknesses. Alto was not the type to bother hiding his annoyance or dislike for something and sometimes this made him very difficult to approach. However, this honesty is sometimes coupled with his denseness which can sometimes bring hilarious results or the most heartfelt moments. His actions more often than not speaks for themselves, whether it was his honest reaction to see buns resembling breasts, choosing whether to enlist or even choosing a romantic partner. Those close to him especially would find it very easy to read how he feels just by looking at him. He is especially not good at hiding how torn he is about something.
His friendship with Mikhail, on the surface, might look quite confusing to on-lookers. Alto is clearly irritated by him since Mikhail had a tendency to flirt with him like he was a woman. This was something Mikhail took great pleasure of doing. However, he was also one of the few people he would allow to see him cry when Sheryl was thought to have died. The war and sacrifices had brought them closer together.
Ranka Lee is special to him in a way that she is the girl he grew up with. He is kinder to her than to anyone else in his life. She is like a sibling to him, which is probably why he finds it easiest to be vulnerable in front of her. However, their history probably blinded him to her feelings. Sheryl had to verbally tell him about them for him to even consider it. He must care for her a lot though since he could not respond to her confession immediately because he did not want to hurt her. Instead, he waited until the very last second to finally tell her his answer.
Sheryl Nome was just an annoying diva to him when they first met. She had given him a bit of flack for doing things on his own and disrupting rehearsal. Later, in the search for her missing earring, his dislike changed gradually. Instead, Sheryl became a confusing girl to him and had a hard time deciding who she really was. Was she the Galactic Fairy who graced the stage and shined like a star? Or was she the playful, innocent girl that just wanted to play around and see/try everything around her? The more he knew her, the more he began to genuinely like her. She related to him in all parts of him the way no one else did; the Kabuki actor and the man who wants to fly higher than anyone has ever flown. He also, quite reluctantly, admired her selflessness, her stubbornness for always get her way and her resolution to do the right thing even at the cost of her life.
All in all, Alto may seem like your typical shounen or mecha hero. He fights to save people but what is the most interesting about him is his own battles with himself in terms of identity/gender and his past that he rejected at the start of the series. It was when he managed to combine both Kabuki and flight that his story really ended. He finally managed to accept all of himself.
CANON POWERS:
Pilot a Jetpack-
In the beginning of the movie, Alto is introduced as a high school student in the Mihoshi Academy Pilot Training course. He was one of their best flyers and was even one of the pilots chosen to perform aerobatics and fly in Sheryl Nome's concert.
His skill can be seen in the scene where Sheryl adlibbed and jumped off the stage. He was able to catch her and even adlibbed along with her.
Pilot a Fighter-
Ozma saw Alto's potential as a pilot when he replaced one of their original pilots. Despite having no real training, he was able to move and fight with the machine. He was also given training once he officially enlisted.
Paper Plane Folding-
It makes sense to have a hobby like this. He is so fascinated by the sky, but he also uses this hobby to analyze the wind speed and direction to check if it is ideal for flying.
Kabuki and Can convincingly dress like a girl-
Before he was a pilot, he had been groomed to be a Kabuki actor and was complimented to be one of the best. Michel teased him for being, "The Genius Actress, Alto-Hime." His family was famous in their world to be a Kabuki family. As a Kabuki actor, he can not only dance he can act graceful and feminine-like. He is so good at it that Ranka even thought about asking him to teach her how to be more feminine.
The fact that he got lucky in the genetic lottery and inherited his mother's good looks helped.
GAME INFO;
MAGIC ABILITY:
He transforms into a girl whenever he takes to the sky. Whether it is a plane, his jetpack or a mobilesuit in the air, he becomes a girl. In the movies, it is described that Alto performed Kabuki in the sky. As Alto had often played female roles, which earned him the name of Alto-hime, this would be an entertaining nod to the lore.
Also, once he becomes female, the effect will usually wear off after about four to five hours.
ANY WEAPONS/MAGICAL ITEMS?: His Jetpack-, which is non-magical.
